Police DAV Public School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organised a doctor’s talk on “Social media addiction” as it has become a common disorder among students.

The session was held in association with Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, under the aegis of the Health and Wellness Club of the school.

Dr Jasmine Heer, psychiatrist, Fortis Hospital, was the keynote speaker.

She said, “Social media is a global phenomenon and an important way to communicate with peers, families and friends. However, excessive use of this platform can lead to social media addiction which is a brain disease. As students are addicted to social media, they tend to get influenced with what they see online.”

Dr Heer said, “Excessive usage of technology has caused disruptions in students’ physical and mental health, their sleeping patterns, weight, levels of exercise and school work. Besides, students have started living in a virtual world.”

She made the students aware of cyber crimes, inlcuding cyber bullying and stalking. She advised the students to cultivate a hobby and indulge in the outdoor activities.

School Principal Dr Anu Verma said, “Social media addiction has become a serious problem as it negatively impact students’ behaviour which is evident in their actions during school hours. Dependence on Google and auto correct have reduced learning and grammar skills among students.”
