Thousands take part in nagar kirtan

A nagar kirtan comprising of the sangat of Sahnewal and surrounding villages was taken ahead of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, being celebrated with religious fervour at the regional, national and international-level.

The nagar kirtan started from the historical Gurdwara Reru Sahib in Sahnewal and reached Sultanpur Lodhi at noon and culminated at the starting point late in the evening.

Devotees reached the gurdwara early in the morning to be a part of the nagar kirtan. Kirtan was recited by ragis and thousands of people stormed the gurdwara to participate in the nagar kirtan proceeding to Sultanpur Lodhi.

Kaar Sewa in charge Baba Major Singh, along with the Management Committee of Gurdwara Reru Sahib, conducted the nagar kirtan. Baba Major Singh shared, “While the 550th birth celebrations of Guruji will be held from November 1 onwards, we are taking out this nagar kirtan to spread a message to the people that the year carries a grand significance for the humanity and it needs to be celebrated with enthusiasm and vigour from every quarter.”

“The whole world has to learn a lot from the life and teachings of Guru Nanak. He was the guru who didn’t discriminate between high or low, poor or rich, weak or strong, and always believed in universal brotherhood and unanimity. The lesson of peace, brotherhood and equality, so essentially required to be imbibed in the present generation, can be learnt completely and entirely from the philosophy of Guru Nanak,” he added.

“We are facing a huge challenge of global warming and climate change. We need to look back and reassess that we have abandoned the teachings of that supreme guru who treated air as guru, water as father and earth as mother. The environmental pollution, which has already stifled thousands of lives and is swallowing a thousand other each day, is because we have overlooked the teachings of our saints and just fed upon our own selfish motifs,” he added.

“The modern day youth should try to walk on the path of justice and righteousness shown by the great guru and improve their lives,” he said.

Crackers were busted and the whole atmosphere was filled with religious sanctity and charm which doubled by the presence of large numbers at the gurdwara. Gataka was performed on the occasion.
