Mohali, April 15
Six buses were impounded for not paying taxes after Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar conducted a surprise check of vehicles being plied by private operators in Zirakpur yesterday.
According to information, 40 long-route buses were checked and most were found plying without the necessary documentation. A fine of Rs 54,000 has been imposed on six buses. Bhullar warned the transporters of a hefty fine if they failed to pay the dues. He said during the checking of documents, most buses were found plying in Punjab without paying the taxes or having requisite documents. He had received complaints about private operators flouting the norms.
Bhullar said as there were passengers in several buses, these were allowed to drop them off at the bus stand before being impounded.
He said tourist buses were being used for transportation, causing a huge loss to the government exchequer. Raids were on penalise operators plying buses illegally, he said.
Sukhwinder Kumar, Regional Transport Officer, Mohali, who accompanied the minister said over the past two weeks, they had impounded 21 buses and imposed a fine of Rs 11 lakh. The drive would continue in the district, he said.
Bhullar said those paying the dues on time would not be harassed. Drivers could contact him on his number directly if any officer demanded money from them, he said. —
