Chandigarh, November 8

Opposing the decision of the government to adjourn the House for two days and call it on November 11, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the ruling Congress of violating the Constitution by taking such ‘Tughlaqi’ decisions and putting burden on the exchequer.

Talking to mediapersons outside the Vidhan Sabha, Leader of Opposition and AAP senior leader Harpal Singh Cheema and MLA Aman Arora said the government was running away from protesters on the streets and the questions of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Cheema claimed a daylong session reportedly cost Rs 70,000. The Chief Minister and the Finance Minister should tell who is responsible for this wasteful expenditure? It would have been better if instead of adjourning this session for two days, it had been extended for a 15 days. Cheema demanded that the pending monsoon session be called at the earliest for 15 days and reiterated the demand for live telecast.

The Leader of Opposition said the account of performance of the five years of the Congress government would be asked by AAP. Questions will be asked in relation to extension of BSF’s jurisdiction, agricultural loans, Dalits, traders and jobless teachers and unemployed sitting on indefinite strike.

Arora said this was happening for the first time in the history of 70 years that two-day break was given between the session. Rules were being kept in abeyance as only 10-11 days of sitting had been held instead of 40 days in a year, he alleged.

BAC meet called off, Cheema unhappy

  • Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema took exception to the cancellation of a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC)
  • He said the BAC meeting was necessary to discuss extending the session, but the government ran away from facing the Opposition
