Amritsar, July 8

After assuming the charge of the Department of Local Government and Administrative Reforms, Punjab Cabinet minister Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar returned to the holy city this evening. He paid obeisance at the Golden Temple and the Durgiana Mandir. A delegation of the Chief Khalsa Diwan, which is also being headed by Dr Nijjar, welcomed him at the Golden Gate.

Minister for Local Government Dr Nijjar said cleanliness, safe drinking water for the people of the city and a proper public transport system would be his first priority. Illegal encroachments along the roads would also be removed.

Meanwhile, residents have great expectations from Dr Nijjar for the development of the city. The city has been facing several serious issues and challenges and residents are hopeful that the Cabinet minister would address them.

Dr Nijjar had assured the residents of his constituency to address the issue of the Bhagtanwala dump during his election campaign. The office-bearers of the Bhagtanwala Dump Sanji Sangharsh Committee are now hopeful that the issue would be resolved.

Sanjay Kural, secretary of the committee, said, “Dr Nijjar used to take part in the agitation for the shifting of the dump during the SAD-BJP tenure. He is well aware of the issue and the effects of pollution on the health of residents of his own constituency. We feel that the Almighty gave him a chance to permanently address the problem of the dump.”

Raman Bakshi, senior Deputy Mayor, said, “The issue of contaminated water has been raised by local AAP MLAs in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. So, Dr Nijjar must be aware of the issue. He should address it on priority, so residents of the city get clean water supply.”
