The Municipal Corporation-sponsored Basant Panchami kite-flying competition at Ranjit Avenue here on Sunday got a lukewarm response with only 49 persons taking part in the event against registered 540 participants.
Gobind Bir Singh got the first prize of Rs 11,000 while Deepak Rai stood second and Varun Palta bagged the third position.
Jaswant Singh, Bhajan Lal Wadhwa, Deepak Bhawan and councillor Mahesh Khanna were judges of the competition.
The councillor said, “The MC organised the event for the first time and residents enjoyed it ”.
Vishal Wdhawan, in charge of the event, said,“ We did not allow the Chinese thread in the competition”.
Meanwhile, former Congress leader raised an objection on the celebration of the Basant festival by the MC. Manna claimed that the MC had spent Rs32 lakh on the music night and the kite competition. “A small number of persons attended the kite flying competition despite spending lakhs on its preparations. Politicians and officers are misusing the public money,” he alleged.
