It’s Congress day barring SAD’s Majitha sting

AMRITSAR: The ruling Congress has won 110 block samiti seats out of 155 for which elections were held on September 19. The total seats were 199 seats and the party had already won 44 seats unopposed. With this, the party has won a total of 154 seats.

The ruling Congress has won 110 block samiti seats out of 155 for which elections were held on September 19. The total seats were 199 seats and the party had already won 44 seats unopposed. With this, the party has won a total of 154 seats.

Of the remaining, the SAD has won 44 while the BJP managed to clinch one seat.

Out of 25 Zila Parishad (ZP) zones, the results of at least five zones were declared till this report was being filed. All the five ZP seats were won by Congress candidates. Notable among the winning candidates was Dilraj Singh Sarkaria from Harsha Chhina zone, who is also a nephew of Cabinet minister Sukhjinder Singh Sukh Sarkaria.

The SAD’s stupendous show in Majitha block, where it won 20 of the 24 block samiti zones, dented the otherwise clean sweep of the Congress in the district. The Congress managed to win only four seats in the constituency of Bikram Singh Majitha.

In the 25-zoned Ajnala block, where elections were held for 18 zones as the Congress had won 7 seats unopposed, the SAD managed to clinch only one seat as the ruling party took away 17 seats easily.

In the 21-zoned Attari block, with Congress winning eight seats unopposed, the elections were held for 13 seats out of which the Congress won nine and SAD four.

In Verka, where the Congress had already won four seats unopposed out of 23 zones, the Congress won 10 seats, SAD three and the BJP managed to open its account by winning one seat.

In the 17-zoned Jandiala Guru, the elections were held for 13 seats out of which the Congress won 10 and the SAD managed to get only three seats. The remaining four seats were won unopposed by the Congress.

In Chogawan block that houses 24 zones, the Congress had a clean sweep as it won all the 19 seats. Earlier, the ruling party had won five seats unopposed.

In the 18-zoned Harsha Chinna block, the ruling party had a clean sweep as it won all seats — 13 in elections and five unopposed.


Results of 20 ZP zones awaited

  • Out of 25 Zila Parishad zones, results of only five were declared till the filing of this report and all seats had been pocketed by Congress candidates. 
  • Notable among ZP winners is Dilraj Singh Sarkaria (Harsha Chhina), nephew of Cabinet minister Sukhjinder Singh Sukh Sarkaria. 
  • Congress wins 154 block samiti seats, including 44 which it bagged unopposed.
  • 44 block samiti zones in SAD’s kitty while the BJP manages to win only one seat.
