Davinder Singh, who was kidnapped by gangsters on Friday, was released after being in illegal detention and suffering torture for over 48 hours.

The victim, rather than returning home, went to his relatives after the brutal assault. He was afraid following the abduction and torture meted out to him. The gangsters had allegedly killed Kashmir Singh’s son Sukhraj in December last year and wanted Kashmir not to appear in the court as witness.

The police had booked notorious gangster Gopi Mahal and his accomplices for the murder. While Gopi Mahal was in jail and facing trial for the murder, his two accomplices Abhiraj Singh and Billa Mandiala, were out on bail. They kidnapped Davinder, who had gone to collect milk from villages.

Davinder told the police that during his illegal detention, the accused roamed in a car after covering his eyes and later, took him into a room in fields where they fired near his ear and feet. They repeatedly thrashed him, he said. They threatened that if Kashmir Singh appeared in the court as witness, they would shot Davinder dead, he said.

Davinder, along with his brother Jatinder Singh, was living with his maternal uncle Kashmir Singh since the death of his parents.

Amritsar (rural) SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal while taking a serious note of the incident said Gopi Mahal would be arrested after taking him on production warrant from Jail. He said raids were on to nab Abhiraj and Billa Mandiala.
