In its ongoing drive to free the government properties from encroachments, the estate wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) sealed a government house on the Tailor road here on Monday. Officials also issued instructions to occupants of other houses near the dispensary in Chehharta to vacate the same within three days.

The MC had long ago built eight residential quarters for its employees at the place. At present, at least three of these have been occupied.

Talking to The Tribune, Estate Officer Sushant Bhatia said, “It has come to our notice that a few residential quarters of the MC have been illegally occupied by unauthorised persons.”

He said that Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and MC Commissioner Sonali Giri have entrusted the estate wing with the task to get the properties freed.

Bhatia said that a proposal to construct a peripheral wall around the MC land in Kirpa Nagar near the Chehharta dispensary would also be mooted. The MC owns a large chunk of land in the area which over the years has been targeted by encroachers.

A few days ago, a bid to encroach upon more portion of the land was made by some people after which MC officials sprang into action and got it vacated.

MC officials said efforts were being made to free public land, including footpaths. “Anti-encroachment drive is being conducted on a daily basis. We are also encouraging people to remove encroachments on footpaths on their own or else we will take strict action,” warned Bhatia.
