Barnala, September 23
Rain has exposed lack of preparedness of the authorities in the city.
“It is not for the first time. Whenever it rains, the city witnesses a flood-like situation. The entire city comes to a standstill as the authorities have failed to make the required arrangements,” said Sukhwinder Singh, who works with a private company.
Not only Barnala, other towns such as Handiaya and Tapa are also facing the similar situation.
“Before the formation of the Congress government, all local leaders made tall claims for the development of the city. But more than a year has passed, we are yet to see any development,” said Kultar Singh, a Handiaya resident.
After getting complaints of waterlogged streets and other problems caused by rain, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dharampal Gupta on Sunday presided over a meeting to check the preparations.
“I have directed all senior officers to make the required arrangements to tackle any emergency situation after rain,” said the DC.
During the meeting, ADC (General) Ruhi Dug, ADC (Development) Parveen Kumar, Barnala SDM Sandeep Kumar, SP (Headquarters) Sharanjit Singh, District Revenue Officer Gagandeep Singh, District Development and Panchayat Officer Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Civil Surgeon Dr Jugal Kishore and other senior officers were also present.
