Woman ends life, spouse booked

AMRITSAR: A married woman committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at Harsha Chhina Uchcha Killa village here yesterday.

A married woman committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at Harsha Chhina Uchcha Killa village here yesterday. She has been identified as Rajwinder Kaur.

Following a complaint lodged by her brother Bagga Singh, the police have booked her husband Ranjit Singh and mother-in-law Dalbir Kaur. No arrest has been made till now and further investigation is under way.

Bagga Singh, a resident of Golden Avenue, stated to the police that Rajwinder was married to the accused two years ago. The couple has a son, Lovedeep Singh. He said Ranjit works as a private bus driver. He alleged he did not enjoy good reputation and had illicit relations with another woman. “Usually, he did not come home. Whenever Rajwinder Kaur asked him about his absence, he replied that that he did not want to live with her as he would solemnise second marriage. Dalbir Kaur also supported Ranjit Singh as she used to threaten Rajwinder Kaur,” the complainant said.

On Thursday, he received a call from an unidentified caller who informed that she had consumed poison. He, along with his son, immediately rushed to her residence. “She was alive at that time and told me that her husband and mother-in-law Dalbir Kaur had been harassing her, forcing her to take the extreme step,” he said.

The police have registered a case under Sections 306, 506 and 120-B of the IPC against the duo and further investigation is under way.

Illicit relations

Victim's brother says her husband had illicit relations with someone else with whom he wanted to settle. Tense over it, Rajwinder Kaur consumed poison to end her life.
