GNDU clarification over Kul-Geet issue

Amritsar, March 26

Guru Nanak Dev University has issued a written clarification regarding the Kul-Geet issue.

In a press statement, Prof Dr Karanjit Singh Kahlon, Registrar, said Sri Guru Gobind Singh Shabad “Deh Shiva Bar Mohe Eha”, shall always be recited with much reverence before the commencement of any major event in the university and would continue in the same manner.

He clarified that Kul-Geet was not a replacement for ‘Shabad’ and was not to be played at the opening of a function. He added that ‘Shabad’ could not be replaced by a ‘Geet’ which was the established view of the university. Earlier, a number of Sikh bodies, including the SGPC, had raised objections over the Guru Nanak Dev University’s move to adopt a song written by Padma Shree Surjit Patar as its official anthem.

Commenting on the GNDU clarification, SGPC chief secretary Dr Roop Singh said, “It is good to keep up traditions and customs. The move of the university shall put an end to this controversy.” Damdami Taksal also expressed its satisfaction. — TNS
