City-based Dr Mohini Chabra has topped the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in the MDS examination. A student of the Dasmesh Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Faridkot, Dr Chabra comes from Hardyal Nagar in Jalandhar. Scoring 435 marks, she has topped in her chosen specialisation in the MDS test.

A student of the 2013-2016 batch, Dr Mohini has also two inventions to her credit. She invented the magnetic block which, she says, reduces the treatment time from two years to six months. A paper regarding this has also been published by her. She has also made innovations to reduce the amount of bone loss in dental surgeries which, in turn, reduce the treatment time.

Daughter of Dr Warrinder Singh, a Chief Medical Officer who served both in Jharkhand and Punjab, and Arvinder Kaur who was a teacher, Dr Mohini has lost both her parents.

She said it was her father’s career and spirit of service which inspired her to do better.

She said, “My parents’ absence and their memory inspires me to do better. My father was my role model and watching him, I knew medical sciences were my calling.”

She says it is her dream down to bring the cost of dental treatment and make it affordable to all. “While I will be practising now, I also intend to carry out research work side by side. Smile designing is a concept which hasn’t arrived in Punjab so far and is prevalent only in big cities in India. People think it is very costly. But that a myth. It’s expensive because it is available with select practitioners. So it’s my dream to make all these treatments cheaper and efficient.”

Mohini, who gives major credit of her success to her HoD and associate professor Dr Surinder Minja and co-supervisor Dr Rohit Duggal for her success, says her ultimate dream, is to feature in reputed journals and become part of the prestigious Indian Orthodontic Society.

Presently staying with her maternal grandfather, she did her schooling from Army Public School Jalandhar and has also been the gold medalist in the BDS from Government Dental College Raipur.
