Tarn Taran, April 23
On the second day of the filing of nominations for the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency for which elections would be held on May 19, Jasbir Singh Dimpa and his younger brother Harpinderjit Singh filed their nominations as the Congress candidate and his covering candidate, respectively.
The papers were filed before the court of the Returning Officer (RO)-cum Deputy Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal.
As per the previous programme, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh was to come here at the time of the fling of nominations but his visit was cancelled at the last moment.
The police had made tight security arrangements, specially on the link roads leading to the national highway around the District Administrative Complex (DAC). The area was a hotbed of farmers’ agitations and to prevent any possible protest, the police and the administration had made great arrangements. It resulted in great inconvenience for the residents who wanted to approach their destination.
Though the MLAs of the area along with a large number of Congress leaders and workers accompanied the convoy of Dimpa, two of the nine MLAs under the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency were conspicuous by their absence. They were Ramanjit Singh Sikki (Khadoor Sahib) and former minister Rana Gurjit Singh (Kapurthala).
The present MLAs were Dr Dharambeer Agnihotri (Tarn Taran), Santokh Singh Bhalaipur (Baba Bakala), Sukhwinder Singh Danny (Jandiala Guru), Navtej Singh Cheema (Sultanpur Lodhi), Sukhpal Singh Bhullar (Khemkaran) and Harminder Singh Gill (Patti).
Jasbir Singh Dimpa took his 79-year-old mother Satwiinder Kaur Gill to the office of the Returning Officer to seek her blessings before filing his nomination papers.
Dimpa‘s father Sant Singh Lidhar, former MLA, was shot dead by the militants during the period of militancy in Punjab.
