On the lines of the Golden Temple Heritage Street, the Municipal Corporation (MC) is all set to develop a heritage walk from Hathi Gate to Durgiana Temple. Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and MC Commissioner Sonali Giri shared the design and architectural details of the project here on Wednesday.

The MC would construct pedestrian zone on both sides of the road. The special road infrastructure and carpeting would be made to tackle the traffic issues. Space for hawkers would also be specified on the street.

As per the plan, the whole stretch is to be developed and beautified as a heritage walk for the convenience of people.

The government has identified buildings to be preserved with traditional architecture. Modern buildings and over 150 existing ones would be given a uniform look.An information centre and a life-size statue of Lord Krishna will also be constructed.

Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu said the plan had been chalked out keeping in view the needs of the devotees at the shrine. “Seating arrangements, such as benches for pilgrims, green space and underground electric wires have been planned. A large LED screen will be installed with Live Durgiana TV,” he said.

In the first phase, Rs 5 crore will be spent on laying storm drain, electrical wires and other utilities underground, and shifting of poles and transformers. The construction of the main gate at Hathi Gate rotary will be developed as a cobbled road with green patches on both sides.

In the second phase, Rs 15 crore will be spent on road furniture, heritage lighting and facade work on buildings. A gate toward the Gol Bagh side will also be constructed. In the third phase, Rs 10 crore will be spent on the passage leading to Durgiana Temple.
