With the arrest of four persons, the city police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of vehicle thieves who used to steal bikes from different parts of the city to sell the same using fake number plates.

Those arrested have been identified as Karandeep Singh, Sahib Singh, Joban, all residents of village Kadowali, Rana Singh of Baath village while their fifth accomplice Gurjinder Singh of Jaspal Nagar, Sultanwind road, is still absconding. A case under Sections 379, 411, 414 and 473 of the IPC has been registered against them.

In a statement issued here on Monday, police officials said Karandeep, Sahib and Joban used to steal motorcycles from different parts of the city and sold the same to Rana on low rates. He used to further sell the bikes after fixing fake number plates and forging documents. The police said raids were on to nab their fifth accomplice Gurjinder Singh.

The gang was busted after a police team intercepted Karandeep, Sahib and Joban with a stolen motorcycle at a checkpoint in the city. Their interrogation led the police team to Rana Singh from whose possession the police found three more stolen bikes. The police said the accused were brought on police remand for further interrogation and more recoveries are likely to be made from their possession.
