School students in Bhagtanwala made postcards addressing to the Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, for shifting a garbage dump from the area on Children’s Day.

Residents led by the Sanji Sangarsh Committee of Bhagtanwala have decided to write one lakh letters and postscards to the Chief Minister to recall him his poll promise to shift the garbage dump.

Capt Amrainder Singh had assured residents of shifting the dump outside the city before the Assembly elections.

It poses several health hazards to residents. Most of the residents complain that due to the continuous burning of garbage, the air quality gets worse, increasing various chest-related problems.

Roads in the areas are not being maintained properly. Lack of a proper sewerage system often attributes to water pollution in the area.

Sanjay Sharma, an office-bearer of the committee, said “Despite an assurance to shift the garbage dump in the manifesto, nothing has been done in this regard. We will remind Capt. Amarinder Singh of his poll promise so that he can fulfil it.”

Earlier, the government had proposed to set up a solid waste management system here, which is being opposed by residents.

“We have been demanding the shifting of the Bhagtanwala garbage dump for years. The Congress had assured to shift the dump out of the city before the Assembly elections, but the party forgot to fulfil it after forming the government. People seek a door-to-door survey in localities around the dumping site to ascertain the health condition of inhabitants,” added Sharma.
