The CIA staff arrested two drug traffickers, identified as Veer Singh, alias Viru (31), and Gulshan Kumar, alias Prince (22), of New Azad Nagar on Wednesday. They were caught at a checkpoint (naka) with 275 gm of heroin.

Preliminary interrogation revealed that the drug racket was being run from inside the Amritsar Central Jail. They were getting instructions from gangster Darshan Singh, alias Raja Kanwada, who is member of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, and his brother Pardeep Kumar, alias Piddu, of Gujjarpura. Both are languishing in jail. Kanwada is their brother.

A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Division B police station.

Vavinder Mahajan, in charge of the CIA staff, said the checkpoint was laid near the Uppar Bari Doab canal near the Sulwanwind road where the accused were seeing coming on a scooter from the Sultawind village side. On seeing the naka, they tried to take a U-turn but their scooter got slipped. The police nabbed them and found the contraband in the scooter dickey.

Raja Kanwada used to call someone from jail, who used to provide them 1 kg of heroin per month. The contraband was supplied to drug peddlers for sale, the police said.

“The accused were brought on police remand. Further interrogation is under way to ascertain whom did they procure the drugs from and to whom they wanted to sell it. Kanwada will also be brought on production warrant for further probe,” said Mahajan.
