A youth sustained bullet injuries while his brother escaped narrowly after a group of persons opened fire at them. The victims had gone to take fodder when the incident took place in Butar Sivian village in Mehta here on Saturday.

The police have booked around eight persons, including a woman for murder bid. Those booked were identified as Navjot Singh of Butar Sevian village, his mother Harjinder Kaur, Lovepreet Singh of Butar Khurd village and Ajaypal Singh of Gaggarbhana village besides four unknown persons.

Manjinder Singh, a resident of the same village, informed the police that he, along with his brother Surjit Singh, had gone to take fodder when the accused reached the spot and started indiscriminate firing. He said Surjit Singh suffered bullet injuries on his legs and he fell on the ground. He said the accused then kicked him. When he raised the alarm, the accused fled away from the scene.

He alleged that it was Harjinder Kaur who was behind the murderous attack. He said they had an old enmity with the accused.

Harsandeep Singh, SHO, Mehta police station, said both the groups had an enmity. They have lodged complaints against each other in the past. He said Navjot was already absconding and further investigation was under way. A case under Sections 307 (murder bid), 506 (intimidation), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54, 59 of the Arms Act was registered.
