Bathinda, August 12

Mayor Balwant Rai Nath has written a letter to the Chief Minister over the decision to close the science stream in the government school at Sanjay Nagar.

The Mayor has argued the CM the decision would affect the poor students, who are studying in the government school.

A few days ago, the school management had received a notification from the Education Department stating that the science stream in the school would be closed due to a lesser number of students.

As per the school education policy, a government senior secondary school must have at least 20 students studying in the science stream collectively in Class XI and XII, but the school already has 29 students in the science stream. Despite this, the department had issued the notification.

If the science stream is closed, the move will force these students, most of them are from underprivileged families, to go to another school situated at a distance of five km on Mall Road.

The school is located close to the Mayor's residence in Sanjay Nagar.

Talking to Bathinda Tribune, the Mayor said, “I have written a letter to the CM as it is wrong to close the science stream in a school where poor students study. The decision has been taken despite the fact there are a sufficient number of students for the stream. Moreover, it will make the students travel more.”

A few days ago, parents of the students had also questioned the move of the Education Department.
