Bathinda, June 6

A Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) panel on Tuesday visited Mohali to check the LED light project. After examining the feasibility of the LED lights installed in Mohali, the panel will give its report that installing these LED lights in the city would be beneficial or not.

XEN Sandeep Gupta, SDO Neeraj, councillors Harmander Singh, Baljit Singh Raju Sra, Rajwinder Singh Sidhu and others on the LED light panel were part of the delegation that went to Mohali.

It is pertinent to mention that in the last meeting of the LED panel, a decision was taken that members of the subcommittee would visit Mohali and other cities in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan to review the LED streetlights installed by them to see how cost-effective they are proving.

The MCB had issued tender for the project in December 2016, but the tender was not opened in January as the poll code of conduct was implemented in the state. The MCB was to open it after the poll code on March 18, but in the meanwhile the new government issued instructions to stop allotting any new work in the project.

The civic body had installed LED lights on a trial basis on Mall Road and it was gearing up to upgrade the whole lighting system in the city. A separate electricity meter was installed on the Mall Road to compare electricity consumption of street lights and LED lights.

The electricity bill of street lights in the city comes around Rs 40 lakh per month. In order to reduce the bill, the MC had planned to replace street lights with LED lights in Bathinda at a cost of Rs 25 lakh.

At present, sodium lamps, tube lights and metal-halide lamps were installed in various areas of the city and these were supposed to be replaced with LED lights.
