Bathinda, June 16

Bio-medical waste and heaps of garbage have been lying unattended at the mortuary unit of the Civil Hospital. Garbage is strewn in one corner of the unit near the entrance, painting a picture of gross neglect by the authorities.

Sources said the problem of garbage has been a concern at the mortuary unit for a long time now. Bio-medical waste and garbage collected from different units are dumped in the mortuary unit.

The sources added that sometimes, garbage is lifted on time, but most of the times, it continues to lie unattended for days. A foul smell emanates from the mortuary unit and visitors at the Civil Hospital can be seen covering their nose while passing through the stretch near the unit.

A staff member at the mortuary unit said the matter was brought to the notice of the higher authorities, but to no avail.

Besides in the absence of the drinking water facility in the unit, staff members and visitors have to walk all the way to the entrance of the Civil Hospital to get chilled potable water. Toilets in the mortuary unit are also not cleaned properly.

Senior Medical Officer Dr Satish Goyal, said, “Garbage is lifted on a routine basis. I will ensure that the garbage lying unattended near the unit is lifted on Monday.”
