Bathinda, July 16

A 100-feet breach has been reported in the sullage carrier, which carries waste and rainwater of the city, near Mehta village.

Due to the breach, all motors pumping rainwater from the city roads developed a snag.

MC officials have started plugging the breach. In the evening, it started raining, making it difficult to continue the repairs.

It is learned that the breach took place as the sullage carrier is quite weak. It has not been repaired for a last long time due to which when water in a large amount was released on Tuesday, it could not bear its pressure, leading to the breach.

The MC had made a plan to lay a parallel pipe of a diameter of 48 inches at a cost of Rs17.20 crore. The aim of laying the parallel pipe is to enhance the capacity of the sullage carrier, but this project is laying stalled due to the opposition from farmers in giving land. The MC has managed to lay only 4-km pipe out of 12 km in the past four years.

Congress leader Jaijeet Johal accused Triveni company and the Mayor of deliberately mismanaging things.

He said the Triveni company was missing from action on Tuesday. “It is not the Congress workers’ job to get the motors started and the breach plugged. As Triveni is not doing its work, Congress workers have been plugging it since morning so that residents don’t face any problem,” he added.

Mayor Balwant Rai Nath said at this time, all leaders across the party lines should rise up from the politics of allegations. He said the state government should help the MC complete the rising main and it would increase the sullage carrier capacity. The Mayor said it would also help dispose rainwater of from the city at the earliest.

He said they were plugging the sullage carrier.
