Chandigarh, July 24

Two days after two thieves made way with valuables, including a laptop, an LED TV and an ATM card through which Rs 21,000 was withdrawn, from a house in Sector 21, the UT police have arrested the duo. The police claim to have solved five cases of theft with their arrest. The accused worked as security guards at a society in Zirakpur at night and committed the theft during daytime.

On July 21, the complainant, Amit Thakur, had reported that thieves decamped with household articles, a laptop, an LED TV and an ATM card from his house. Following the incident, a team of the Sector 19 police station scrutinised the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area through which the registration number of the motorcycle used by the accused was revealed.

DSP (East) Satish Kumar said the accused later withdrew Rs 21,000 using the complainant’s card from an ATM in Baltana. “We collected the CCTV footage of the ATM, which led to the identification of the accused,” the DSP said.

The accused, Gagandeep (27) and Mahesh, alias Ajay (39), both residents of Phase II, Dhakoli, were arrested.

Police officials said with the arrest of the accused, seven LED TVs, three laptops, an Activa scooter, nine mobile phones, a digital camera, two wrist watches, artificial jewellery and garments had been recovered. The police have also seized two motorcycles owned by the accused, which were used in the crime.
