Breaking the record of the past eight years, Chandigarh received the highest rainfall this monsoon.

According to the Met Department, from June 1 to September 12, it rained 793.7 mm in the city. This is a 4 per cent increase over the normal rain of 762.5 mm. This is the highest rainfall in the season in eight years.

Last year, it had rained 752.8 mm, which was 11 per cent less than normal. In 2016, it had rained way below normal with the city witnessing just 456.9 mm rainfall. It was 46 per cent less than normal.

The lowest-ever rainfall in Chandigarh was witnessed in 1987 at 275.6 mm, 67 per cent below normal. The maximum rainfall was recorded in 1988 at 1,748 mm, 107 per cent above normal.

“After many years, the city has witnessed a good monsoon. It has received the highest rainfall in eight years,” said Surender Paul, Director, Met Department, Chandigarh, adding that the remaining part of September was likely to witness light rain. Paul said the increased rainfall would be beneficial in many ways.

Due to the above normal rain, people should be ready for colder and foggier days in the winter season. “It will definitely have an impact on the winter season. The winter will be colder. There are chances of more fog this time,” said the Met Director.

The city witnessed 2.7 mm of rainfall on Wednesday.
