Blood bank achieves WHO target

PATIALA:The blood bank at the Transfusion Medicine Department, Government Medical College, Patiala has achieved the Wlord Health Organisation’s target of 100 per cent voluntary collection for 2018.



Patiala, January 9

The blood bank at the Transfusion Medicine Department, Government Medical College, Patiala has achieved the Wlord Health Organisation’s target of 100 per cent voluntary collection for 2018. Last year, the department had collected 2,02,78 units of blood. As many as 16,053 units of were collected through blood donation camps while 4,225 units were collected through in-house blood collection.

Dr Kanchan Bhardwaj, head, Department of Transfusion Medicine, Government Medical College,  said, “Our blood bank is the only department of the state which organised the maximum number of camps (244 in 2018). This is a very big achievement and with the help of our camp organisers, we are also fulfilling the goal set by the National Blood Policy.” 

During 2018, the blood bank provided more than 40,000 blood components to the needy patients admitted. Dr Kanchan said the maximum numbers of NGOs and voluntary organisations are associated with them for voluntary blood donation. — TNS
