Chandigarh, June 5

Two months after he was found in possession of opium, a Burail jail inmate has been caught with the narcotic again.

The inmate, identified as Parwinder Singh, who is lodged in the barrack number 9, was caught with 45 grams of opium during a surprise check yesterday.

Sources said a search was conducted by Head Warder Dharmpal, during which opium was recovered from a pocket of the inmate’s trouser. The narcotic was wrapped in polythene.

The recovery of addictive substances from the barracks has once again exposed the tall claims made by the jail authorities regarding measures taken to ensure inmates do not get access to drugs.

In April, Parwinder and another inmate, Bobby, were found in possession of opium and charas. The jail authorities had conducted a surprise check in the barracks on April 7 during which of 13.6 grams of charas was recovered from Bobby while Parwinder was found having 19.2 grams of opium. The jail staff has changed their barracks after the recovery of addictive substances.

The police said on the complaint of Amandeep Singh, Deputy Superintendent, Model Jail, a case under the Narcotic, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against the inmate at the Sector 49 police station.

Interestingly, the issue of addictive substance on the jail premises was recently raked up by an undertrial at the District Courts. The undertrial had alleged that contraband was taken to the jail from the judicial lock-up where inmates were brought for hearing.

Phone found in Ambala jail

Ambala: A mobile phone was recovered from the Central Jail in Ambala City on Tuesday.

As per information, acting on a tip-off, an inspection was carried out in Block 24 of the jail. During the inspection, a mobile phone was recovered. On the complaint of Vivek Sangwan, DSP Jail (Security), a case under Section 42 of the Prisons Act was registered at Baldev Nagar police station today.

AIG virat shifts jail officials

AIG (Jails) Virat has transferred an Assistant Superintendent, Jail, a Head Warder and 18 warders following the recovery of opium from the jail inmate. “We are making efforts to ensure that banned substances do not reach the jail premises. We hold regular checks in the barracks, which has led to recovery of banned substances,” said AIG Virat,
