The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a video asking the students to stay away from medicines to improve their memory during exams.

“Many youngsters are lured by this thought. The truth is that lack of certain nutrients in food affects concentration leading to tension, thereby inhibiting learning,” the CBSE said.

In a novel initiative, the board this year launched a YouTube channel, ‘CBSE Counselling’, which has videos on exam anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, substance abuse and internet addiction.

The video uploaded a week ago has crossed 1,000 views so far. It explains to the students how they can convert exam anxiety into stress buster by conceptualising to stay focused and take one step at a time. The video encourages students to practice a few things such as choosing a study place with minimum distractions, plan revision time with a time table, identify weak areas and work on them.

For improving concentration, the CBSE has advised the students to practice deep breathing and brain gym exercises.

CBSE explains stress busters, stress builders

Stress builder

  • “I can’t get the mistake I made in question number 10 out of my mind. The paper is ruined. I have disappointed everyone.”

Stress buster

  • “No one is perfect. I did my best. I’m overreacting to one mistake when the overall paper is fine.”

Locate exam centre with app

A lot of students create hustle bustle in searching examination centres and often mess up things. The CBSE has advised the students to visit the examination centre a day in advance using the CBSE Exam Centre Locator application, which can be downloaded from Google Play Store.

To-do list for students

  • Know your concentration span and study with breaks
  • Plan your things to-do list according to the time in which you study best
  • Do not plan tough topics at night unless you study better in late hours
  • Change topics after every 1-2 hours. Studying a variety of topics helps maintain concentration
  • 20-30 minute power naps will help increase concentration
  • Do not let previous results discourage you. Identify your weak areas
  • Finish your revision and give yourself a treat – like watch your favourite programme, listen to music, etc
  • Master the essential information first
  • Prioritise your workload. Give your best concentration time to the toughest subject
  • Eat brain foods — bananas, dry fruits to energise your brain

Don’ts

  • Collect new material and notes from friends and learn them till the last minute without any time for revision
  • Keeping awake the whole night before an exam
