Nabha, April 25

Concerned over the increase in the accidental death cases due to the stray animal menace, Nabha Municipal Councillors have submitted a memorandum to the sub-divisional magistrate to initiate steps tackle the town of the menace, besides stopping Rs 1-lakh payment to the local gaushala.

Recently social worker Harmesh Pahuja, a resident of Bathindi Mohala, was attacked by a stray bullock and was injured. He later succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital.

Municipal Councillors urged the SDM to initiate steps for controlling the hundreds of stray animals roaming freely in the town. They said animals were not only attacking residents, but are also killed in accidents at night hours.

During the budget meeting, the councilors had objected to the payment of Rs 1 lakh to a gaushala because its management had failed to catch the animals. The gaushala near Duladi Gate in the town contains about 600 animals, while another centre opened by the Nabha Gaushala Committee at Vazidpur also houses around 500 animals

An MC official said a majority of the councillors were against the payment of Rs 1 lakh to the gaushala as it had failed to deal with the menace. Sources further said if the gaushala failed to deal with the menace the councillors would have to pass a resolution for stopping the payment to the gaushala.
