Chandigarh, February 20

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has referred to the UT Administrator a petition regarding the Dadu Majra dumping ground which has made the lives of the area residents miserable.

Dadu Majra resident Dayal Krishan had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the plight of those living in the vicinity of the dumping ground. He had mentioned that due to a large quantity of city waste being thrown at the open dumping ground near Dadu Majra Colony, residents are suffering from various diseases like cancer, TB.

“Several assurances were given by political leaders. The MC knows about the issue, but takes it as just another problem. Foul smell emanating from piles of garbage makes it tough for people to breathe even while sitting in their houses. So, it is requested to you that the dumping ground be shifted from here as soon as possible and every child here will thank you for this,” he wrote in the letter.

Following this, the PMO referred the issue to the Administrator asking him to reply to the petitioner.

Chandigarh generates around 450 metric tonne of waste per day. After being collected by door-to-door waste collectors, it goes to Sehaj Safari Kendras in different sectors from where MC vehicles shift it to the waste processing plant. For a long time, the company operating the processing plant has not been able to process complete garbage and throws the unprocessed waste in the open dumping ground causing a huge inconvenience to the area residents.
