Chandigarh: The dengue count in the city rose to 963 with seven more cases being reported on Sunday.



Chandigarh: The dengue count in the city rose to 963 with seven more cases being reported on Sunday. Last year, the number of cases was 1,246. Humid conditions, coupled with pleasant temperature, provides a congenial condition for the breeding of aedes egypti mosquitoes, which cause dengue. With the chill filling the air these days, dengue attack is likely to see a fall. TNS

Student still unconscious

Chandigarh: A Class X student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Manimajra Complex, Chandigarh, who got injured on Thursday at Sarangpur during a school trip, is still unconscious. "Varinder Kumar is on ventilator at the PGIMER. We have been told that he is stable. Earlier, the observation period was 48 hours but now it has been extended," said Principal Rajesh Kumar. He added, "We are taking care of his all medical expenses. A teacher remains at the hospital all the time." Varinder, along with nearly 100 students, had gone to see the Science and Technology Park at Sarangpur when he slipped and fell on a brick, sustaining a head injury. TNS

Man held with banned vials

Chandigarh: The police have arrested a resident of Maloya, identified as Sarwar Khan, with 24 banned injections. The vials were meant to be sold to locals. A case has been registered against the accused at the Maloya police station. TNS

Phil wins autocross meet 

Panchkula: Phil Matthai won the second edition of the Maruti Suzuki Autoprix-National Autocross Championship on Sunday. He finished the race in 2 minutes, 28 seconds in the final round. Jagbir Nirwan, Mohd Yusuf,  Karanpreet, Abhishek Mishra, Parishrut Jhina, Amit, Harvinder Bhola, Amber Udasi, Saazid Singha, Amandeep Singh, Bani Yadav, Lakshay Veer Dabas, Chaitanya, Suresh Rana, Amanpreet  and Jagmeet Gill also qualified for the next leg to be held in Mangalore. The final leg will be held at the Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida.

Satluj boys win football c’ship 

Panchkula: Satluj Public School, Sector 4, won the 3rd six-a-side football tournament. In the final, hosts Satluj Public School defeated Vivek High School, Sector 38 (Chandigarh), 1-0. Saurabh scored the goal.

Ram bags chess title 

Chandigarh: Ram Prakash, Satinder Sharma and Vinodh Kumar won first three positions, respectively, in the open category on the concluding day of  chess championship, at Manav Mangal School, Sector 21, on Sunday. In the U-16 category, Himanshu Garg finished first while Roopjeet Singh and Varun Sindhwani claimed second and third positions, respectively. Pratyaksh Goel won the U-12 event followed by Arnav Kushwaha at second position and Shaurya Chopra on third. In the girl’s open category, Amaira Mittal and Japneet Kaur won the first two positions, respectively. 

Badminton meet from Nov  2 

Mohali: Mohali District Badminton Association will organise the junior (U-17 and U-19) Badminton Championships on November 2-3 at the Phase-5 sports complex. Interested players can submit their entries with the organisers before November 1 at the tournament venue.  TNS 

Annual function

Patiala: Milestone Smart School situated in the heart of the city on Sirhind road, Patiala, organised its annual function at the Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts. The event was full of grand performances by students. The function was held in two parts. The chief guest of the former segment was Deputy Commissioner Kumar Amit. Little angels exhibited all their items zealously and to the best of their ability. The chief guest of the latter segment was Justice Paramjeet Singh Dhaliwal, President, Punjab State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Senior students of the school participated and exhibited their vigorous talent. They enthralled the audience with their breathtaking performance. Hindi play 'Swachta' presented the picture of clean and green India. All dance forms were excellently presented.

Annual sports day

Podar International School celebrated its annual sports day on Saturday with great zeal and fervor. The celebrations began with a march past by all four houses. The mass PT display by primary students, giddha and bhangra performances remained as the main attraction of the event. Harjinder Singh Walia was the chief guest. He gave away medals to the winners and applauded them with great pride. TNS
