Chandigarh, September 13

Four fraudsters, who used to dupe gullible people outside banks in various ways, including offering them to deposit their money in bank accounts, were held by the UT police. Two recent cases reported from the city have been solved with their arrest.

According to the police, a person was duped of Rs 25,000 outside PNB in the Industrial Area, Phase II, on September 8 after the accused offered to help the victim in depositing money through an ATM. The accused then tricked the victim and took his money and mobile phone by offering him their money claiming that it was Rs 2 lakh. However, it turned out to be a bundle of papers wrapped in a handkerchief.

A similar incident was reported on September 11 by Bhushan Chorasiya of Colony No 4. He was also duped with a similar modus operandi. DSP (South) Deepak Yadav said on secret information, a naka was laid near the Sector 47 gurdwara and the accused, Jitender Paswan and Santosh Sahni, both natives of Bihar, were apprehended. The police also recovered Rs 10,720 from their possession.

The DSP said during investigation the accused disclosed about the identities of their accomplices following which two more accused, Aftab and Upender, were arrested and Rs 10,000 recovered from them.

Cases against the accused have been registered at the Sector 31 police station.

Modus operandi

The accused used to look for gullible people and convince them that they had a huge amount of money which they could not deposit in the bank for various reasons. The accused used to take the victim’s money and hand them a “bigger amount” in bundles of papers wrapped in a handkerchief. The victims later used to realise that they had been duped.
