The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here will draft a policy that would provide for more industrial training in the curriculum and allow the faculty to take part in industry-related projects and other activities with more flexibility.

Director Sarit K Das held a meeting with representatives from several industries in Chandigarh yesterday to know about their expectations from engineering institutes. He said industrialists wanted to increase the training time of students to four or six months. At present, industrial training is for two months.

“The representatives said summer industrial training programme of two months was insufficient. By the time, a student started understanding what was to be done, two months would be over,” he said.

The policy would be ready by August and, subsequently, it would be placed before the Board of Governors for implementation.

On the need for such a policy, Das said government-funded institutions were bogged down with several rules and regulations. “Many a time, it frustrates faculty members, who ultimately hesitate in taking up industrial projects.”

Das added the faculty would be allowed to spend time in the industry to update them with the latest developments and requirements.
