Alleged negligence on the part of the Electricity Department in Panchkula has once again claimed a life. Five-year-old Vivek, a resident of Sector 20, was electrocuted this morning.

Vivek, a student of UKG at a private school in Dhakoli, Zirakpur, returned from his school around 11 am. He started playing with his friends in rainwater accumulated outside his residence at Ashiana flats in Sector 20. Vivek got an electric shock from current that passed through water from an electricity wire of a high-voltage electricity transformer located nearby.

His father Vijender tried to save his son, but he, too, got an electric shock. Somehow, he managed to bring out his son from the water and rushed him to the General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Vivek’s father Vijender, grandfather Gautam Prasad, a former councillor, and other residents residing in the Ashiana flats alleged that they had submitted a number of complaints to the Electricity Department regarding the risk posed by the transformer, but no action was taken by the authorities.

Family members lodged a complaint against officials of the Electricity Department in Sector 20. The police have registered an FIR against the officials. Investigating officer Sukhjinder Singh said they had started the probe. — TNS

Electricity wires repaired

After the death of the five-year-old, employees of the Electricity Department reached the spot and repaired the damaged electricity wires.

The accident had occurred due to a potholed road. Officials of the Administration were booked, but no action was taken.
