Miscreants pose as cops, make way with woman’s jewellery

CHANDIGARH:Unidentified miscreants, who were posing as cops, duped a 55-year-old woman of a gold chain and two gold ‘karas’ on Madhya Marg in Sector 26 here.

Chandigarh, November 17

Unidentified miscreants, who were posing as cops, duped a 55-year-old woman of a gold chain and two gold ‘karas’ on Madhya Marg in Sector 26 here.

The accused asked the victim, Shanti Devi, to remove her jewellery claiming that snatching incidents were on the rise and fled after snatching the ornaments.

Sources said the victim was returning from Sector 17 to her home in Mani Majra and had got down from a bus outside the Sector 26 vegetable market to make some purchase. As the victim was about to leave, three persons approached her and told her that they were cops. “The miscreants snubbed the victim for wearing gold jewellery. They told her that snatching incidents are rising in the city and it was not safe to roam at public place while wearing jewellery,” the sources added.

The accused then asked the victim to remove her jewellery and keep it in her bag. “As soon as she removed her gold chain and two gold ‘karas’, the accused snatched these from her. Before the victim could react, the accused fled the spot,” said the police.

Sources said the police reached the spot on getting the information about the incident. Recording of CCTV cameras was being scrutinised to identify the accused, the sources added.  The police have initiated an inquiry. — TNS
