N-choe becoming breeding ground for mosquitoes

N-choe passing through residential area of Phase-9, Mohali, which was once life-line of the city because its flora and fauna, has now become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The choe has also turned into a dumping ground for waste. Throwing debris in the choe leads to water-logging in the area, which will lead to rise in malaria and dengue cases. The MC, Mohali us requested to take immediate measures to revive the flora and fauna of the choe to keep our city clean and green. — Col TBS Bedi (retd), Mohali

Shun firecrackers for a clean Diwali 

Diwali will be celebrated with fervour on October 27. The three-hour window provided to city residents for bursting firecrackers on Diwali and Gurpurb will help in keeping the air and noise pollution levels well within permissible limits. We all are responsible citizens of the country and should adopt the policy of ‘no firecrackers’ this year, so that we can breathe clean air and have an noiseless environment around us. There are so many other novel ways to celebrate Diwali such as exchanging gifts and playing with colours. Organise awareness drive regarding waste segregation 

With reference to the news report ‘Segregate or pay up’ published in Chandigarh Tribune on October 15, I think it is the primary duty of city residents to segregate dry and wet household waste before throwing it in dustbins. The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation must hold awareness drives to educate the citizens to segregate dry and wet waste before bluntly forcing fines on them.  —  RK Kapoor, Chandigarh

Education system needs a complete overhaul

I was really impressed by the story ‘Educationists bat for outcome-based learning’ published in Chandigarh Tribune on October 15. The present education system focuses only on sharpening individualistic capabilities to garner big monthly remuneration packages. How realistic is such approach? We are now just educating children and not making them learned. A person who passed Class X four or five decades ago is still more learned than even doctorate in education of these days. A roadside auto-mechanic is professionally more learned than an automobile engineer. Present education system has rendered egoistic, self-centred, self-deficient degree holders. The Tribune initiative is good. We need to uphold and maintain humanitarian values enriched professional skills through educational system. —  MPS Chadha, Chandigarh
