A police team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Patran, seized 18.6 kg of silver from a passenger, travelling on the Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus on the Punjab-Haryana border, near Dhabi Gujran village, in Patran block of the district on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, the police had seized Rs 1 crore in demonetised currency.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Patiala, Mandeep Singh Sidhu, said the bus was coming from Narwana side and stopped on the interstate border check post by the Patran police. The silver weighing 18.6 kg in the form of 43 biscuits was recovered from a passenger, he added.

The DSP, Patran, Sukh Amrit Randhawa, said, “After the recovery, we called officials of the Income Tax and Excise and Taxation Department to further investigate into the matter. The checking is part of the ongoing drive following orders of the Election Commission.”

“We had set up check posts at three points in the morning and were successful in recovering silver from a bus. The suspect could not produce any papers of the silver biscuits he was carrying. As per the investigation, the silver biscuits were being taken to Sunam block in Sangrur district,” he added.

The police arrested the suspect identified as Sagar Mahadev, a resident of Maharashtra, in this connection.

The Patiala SSP, Sidhu, said, “We will continue checking on the interstate border as per the guidelines from the State Election Commission and Election Commission of India.”
