PU stops laying bricks around trees

CHANDIGARH: After AAP convener Prem Garg criticised the cash-strapped PU for making bricked boundaries around the trees, a sub-committee was formed under the chairmanship of Prof Shankarji Jha, acting Vice-Chancellor, during a meeting here today.

Chandigarh, May 21

After AAP convener Prem Garg criticised the cash-strapped PU for making bricked boundaries around the trees, a sub-committee was formed under the chairmanship of Prof Shankarji Jha, acting Vice-Chancellor, during a meeting here today.

Seeking to propose an alternative and culling the previous ‘campus beautification’ plan, committee members, including Prof RK Singla, Dean, Research, Prof Devinder Singh, SVC, Chairperson, Department of Zoology and Geology, Prof MC Sidhu of the Department of Botany, Dr Madhuri Rishi from the Department of Environment Studies and Executive Engineer-l, DE (Horticulture) and AE (Horticulture), visited the site to examine the issue. Earlier in May, PUTA and the SFS had resisted the move in the view of it “tampering” with the varsity’s heritage and the unnecessary allocation of funds.

The sub-committee informed that the work of concrete structure being built around the palm trees adjoining the Gandhi Bhawan and the road leading to Arts Block-3 has been stopped. It was resolved that the structures created around the plants on the road leading up to the PU library roundabout would be beautified by planting shrubs around them. — TNS
