Chandigarh, September 17

As many as 137 people will have to appear for the driving test again after they failed to get their driving licenses renewed within a year after its expiry date. The UT Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) implemented the amended Motor Vehicles Act on September 1.

The amended Act has a provision making it mandatory for the person to appear for the driving test again if he/she fails to get the driving licence renewed in a year after its expiry date.

Earlier, a person was given five years to renew the driving licence after paying a penalty of Rs 1,100 per year. The person was asked to appear for the test in case he/she failed to renew the driving licence within five years after its expiry date. Now, the time period has been reduced from five years to one year in the amended Act.

A driving licence is issued for 20 years and it has to be renewed after its expiry date. As per the new provision, people will not have to pay the penalty in case they apply for the renewal within a year.

Sources in the RLA said the driving test centre in Sector 23 had witnessed huge rush after the new provision.

An officer of the RLA said to manage the increasing rush of applicants appearing for driving test, the authorities had decided to hold the test on Saturday also.
