NIA court discharges Kashmiri student in terror module case

MOHALI: The National Investigating Agency (NIA) court in Mohali today discharged Danish Rehman Sofi, a Kashmiri student, for his alleged involvement in a terror module in Jalandhar.

The National Investigating Agency (NIA) court in Mohali today discharged Danish Rehman Sofi, a Kashmiri student, for his alleged involvement in a terror module in Jalandhar.

The court issued release orders of Danish, who was arrested by the Punjab Police in October 2018 as the NIA could not produce any evidence against him in the court.

According to sources, the Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have busted a terror module in Jalandhar in October 2018 by arresting some Kashmiri students, who were allegedly linked to the Al-Qaida offshoot Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGH). Danish, who was a third-year BTech student of a private college at Lalru here, was residing in Dera Bassi. He was arrested from Jammu and Kashmir.

The remaining students who were arrested included Yusuf Rafiq Bhatt, Zahid Gulzar, Mohammed Idris Shah alias Nadeem and Sohail Ahmed Bhatt.

The students were nabbed from the hostel of of an engineering institute at Shahpur, Jalandhar, and the police claimed to have recovered two weapons, including an assault rifle, and some explosives from their possession on the outskirts of Jalandhar.

A case in this connection was registered in Jalandhar last year under Section 121 (waging, or attempting to wage war against the country), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act and the Explosives Act.
