Chandigarh, June 24

Against the perception that there are adverse effects if one consumes milk after taking fish, PGI doctors said there was no truth in it.

Speaking at a press conference, Prof Davinder Parsad, said, “There is no connection between milk and fish causing white patches. There is even no study to show it. It is just a misconception prevalent in our country.”

He said 94 per cent it is triggered due to stress and physical trauma. Stress like failing in examination or getting divorced cause it. Pollution could also be another reason and only in six per cent cases it is a hereditary problem.

Doctors said the cases at the PGI are rising. A total of 120 patients visit every week as far as vitiligo was concerned. Of the total cases, 20 new ones are reported every week. Many patients from other states and aboard are coming to the premier hospital as awareness is rising regarding this.

On World Vitiligo Day, Dr Prasad shared surgery for this problem costs just Rs 2,000 at PGI, while it is very costly at private hospitals ranging between Rs 1 to 2 lakh.

He further shared vitiligo (leucoderma) affects 1 to 4 per cent world population. “There are many misconceptions about this disease. In India, men, women and children with vitiligo face severe psychological and social problems. It is more severe in the case of young women and children. It is curable and can be treated within six months,” Dr Prasad added.
