CHANDIGARH: Prof Nishtha Jaswal from the Department of Laws, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has been appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla, for a period of five years.

Prof Nishtha Jaswal from the Department of Laws, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has been appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla, for a period of five years.

Prof Nishtha, 59, is the first woman teacher from PU to have been selected as the Vice-Chancellor. Her husband Prof Paramjit Singh Jaswal is Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab.

“It’s a rare case where both husband and wife are vice chancellors of law universities at the same time. It is probably the only case,” said Prof Nishtha.

Born in Shimla, she completed her graduation from MCM DAV College, Sector 36, Chandigarh. She was appointed by Chief Justice of HP High Court Surya Kant, who is also the Chancellor of HP National Law University, Shimla.

She has 32 years of teaching experience and 34 years of research experience. Her field of specialisation is constitutional law, administrative law, human rights and environmental law. She has published 65 papers so far and has six books under her name.

She has served Panjab University in various capacities and remained Chairperson of the Department of Laws and Panjab University Committee against Sexual Harassment (PUCASH).

Her book ‘Environmental Law’, second edition (2003), has been cited thrice by the Supreme Court in a landmark judgment.

She was awarded the British Academy Visiting Professorship in 1992 and did research at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. She was designated as Mehr Chand Mahajan Professor of Law by Panjab University, Chandigarh.
