Having received a boost from the HRD Ministry, who hiked this year’s grant to Rs 207.80 crore from Rs 197 crore, Panjab University today received its second instalment of Rs 20 crore.

The university has already received the first instalment of the same amount after the court ordered the UGC to do so. This leaves a deficit of Rs 167.80 crore and the PU expects to receive a monthly grant regularly now. “This instalment will enable the university to give salaries and pensions to employees for June,” said Vice Chancellor Arun K Grover. The total deficit for thePU according to budget estimates is however Rs 203.8 crore as Rs 36 crore is the previous deficit. Considering Punjab’s enhanced grant of Rs 33 crore, which is effectively a Rs 4-crore hike, the deficit still says close to Rs 200 crore.
