Ambala, April 17

Hundreds of wheat bags were drenched due to unwanted rainfall at the grain market in Ambala City late this evening.

Farmers are worried due to uncertain weather conditions as the wheat stock was lying in the open areas. There are not adequate covers with commission agents to cover the entire stock.

Meanwhile, Duni Chand, president of the Commission Agents Association, said: “Procurement agencies must ensure timely lifting from the market. Slow lifting leads to huge stocks pilling up.”

Ambala Cantonment Grain Market secretary KK Malik claimed that no bags were drenched at the cantonment grain market as arrivals had been slow so far. The stock that reached here was timely covered and placed under sheds.

District market enforcement officer Radhey Sham said he was yet to get the details about the stocks lying in the grain markets.

Unwanted rainfall had damaged wheat crop in Naraingarh and Shahzadpur segments of Ambala last week. Prolonged winter and spell of rain at regular intervals had delayed wheat harvesting and Wednesday evening’s rain has further delayed the harvesting in the district.
