SCS set to start 2 new diploma courses

CHANDIGARH:School of Communication Studies (SCS), Panjab University, Chandigarh, is all set to start two new diploma courses from the 2019-2020 session.

School of Communication Studies (SCS), Panjab University, Chandigarh, is all set to start two new diploma courses from the 2019-2020 session.

A postgraduate diploma in journalism and mass communication and another in radio production will have 25 seats each. The department is already running a diploma course in advertising and public relations.

The two courses have been planned keeping in mind the demands of society and future needs of the industry. Chairperson Prof Archana R Singh said, “Both courses will include a mandatory internship in media houses to provide the students with hands-on experience of working as a media professional.” She said syllabus of the courses had been designed keeping in mind the ever-changing media industry.

The media industry is seeing a boom thanks to the shift online; news portals and web based television and radio channels have opened a new avenue for budding journalists. The spurt in radio channels, both commercial and community has also led to job creation in the arena.

She said the department was well-equipped to provide its students with practical know-how of the industry. It had been running Community Radio Station since 2011 and had now established a television studio which would be functional from the upcoming session. 

The applications will be invited in July and admissions will take place after the written test and interview.
