Patiala: Contractual security guards at Punjabi University on Wednesday held a protest against the relieving of three employees without any notice by their contractor in the university.



Patiala: Contractual security guards at Punjabi University on Wednesday held a protest against the relieving of three employees without any notice by their contractor in the university. About 200 contractual workers along with safai karamcharis and others protested outside the main gate of the university. Arvinder Singh, a security guard, said, "We have been working here since long. Suddenly, three of us were told not to report on job early morning by the contractor. This was done without any advance notice." The university stated that the matter involves the security guards and the contractor only as these guards were hired by the contractor. TNS

Labour Day observed 

Patiala: Members of the Northern Railway Men's Union observed International Labour Day. Jagdeep Singh Kahlon, president of the youth wing of the union, said International Labour Day was observed on May 1 to remember the protests of labour in Chicago. Rajpura branch president Jasmer Singh said youngsters should always remember this contribution. He added that the Northern Railway Men's Union and the All-India Railway Men's Federation had also contributed with protests to fulfill their demands. The condition of workers was being ignored by the government, he added. He said there were about 2 lakh vacancies in the Railways. Jagdeep Kahlon said the workload because of vacancies was mounting on the employees. He said, "The union members will organise a hunger strike for our demands from May 8." TNS

Col Frank Von Goldstein debate 

Patiala: Yadavindra Public School, Patiala, will host the 28th Col Frank Von Goldstein from May 3 to 5. As many as 13 teams from leading schools will participate in this prestigious debate, which was initiated in 1989 in the honour of Col Frank Von Goldstein (former Headmaster and iconic figure of the school). The debate will be held in a modified parliamentary/Cambridge form and will be judged by a panel of eminent judges in the preliminary, semi-finals and final rounds. TNS
