Chandigarh, October 14

The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police busted a gang of snatchers and vehicle thieves. Proclaimed offender Vicky (31), a resident of Sector 46, was arrested on October 7 while Usman Ali (32) and Shakil Ahmad (40), both from Shahadra in Delhi, were arrested on October 10.

The three were involved in several cases of snatching and vehicle theft in Chandigarh and the police have claimed to solve a total of 17 cases, of which 13 are of gold chain snatching and four of two-wheeler theft.

They used to target elderly women wearing gold chains. The accused, according to the police, tried to sell these gold chains in Chandigarh and nearby areas but failed to do so as jewellers did not accept these without bills. Vicky was arrested last year as well and at that time he was declared a proclaimed offender in 45 cases. As many as 100 cases of snatching, robbery and vehicle theft have been registered against him.
