Harmail Singh Tohra and his wife, Kuldeep Kaur Tohra, who had joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ahead of the 2017 Assembly polls would be joining the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on April 20.

The SAD nominee for the 2019 General Election from the Patiala constituency Surjit Singh Rakhra confirmed the development.

Kuldeep is the adopted daughter of late Akali stalwart Gurcharan Singh Tohra, who fell out with former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in 1998.

Harmail’s ambitions to get the SAD ticket for Kuldeep from the Sanaur segment were dashed to the ground in 2017 after the Akalis gave the ticket to Harinder Pal Singh Chandumajra, a son of MP Prem Singh Chandumajra.

Hardiner Pal had defeated Kuldeep, who contested on the AAP ticket with a margin of 20,818 votes.

After a victory in 1997, Harmail never won an election. In 2012, his wife Kuldeep contested unsuccessfully from the Patiala-rural constituency.

Sources said, “The SAD president Sukhbir Badal will visit his house and he will formally make an announcement.”

For many, Harmail has been the face of the Tohra legacy.  Tohras were not available for comments.
