Ropar, August 11

The district police have taken action against two cops who allegedly allowed a suspect, nabbed in connection with illegal mining, to flee here today.

Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu, SSP, sent Chamkaur Sahib SHO Satish Kumar to the Police Lines and suspended ASI Sarabjit Singh.

Sandhu said he had got a tip-off that illegal mining was rampant in the Chamkaur Sahib area and the local police were turning a blind eye to it. A team led by DSP Manvir Singh was despatched from Ropar to conduct a raid at Kahanpur village. Manvir took along Satish, Sarbjit and local police post incharge Sarbjit Singh. They caught Sikandar Singh and seized three sand-laden tractor trailers.

The team handed over Sikandar and the seized vehicles to the local police before returning to Ropar. Later, the SSP was informed that the suspect had fled. He said a department inquiry had been ordered.
