Chandigarh, June 25

The Syndicate has recommended that the Vice-Chancellor should take up the issue of colleges and their pay disputes with Punjab Education Minister.

It includes the case of Kawaljit Kaur, principal of SPN College in Mukerian, who was paid only her basic salary for 22 months and kicked out two months before her two-year probation was to end.

According to sources, the VC has said that he would hold a meeting with the chairman of the SPN College and find a solution to the problem. The VC will take up the service conditions and salary related issues with the Education Minister and also discuss it with VC's of other universities.

Surprise raids to keep a check on colleges

The Syndicate has decided that surprise raids will be carried out in the PU-affiliated colleges regularly to keep a check on 'non- attendant' colleges. These are colleges where students have the option of not attending classes but have to pay the full fee. The Syndicate took cognisance of the fact that such a practice is a mockery of the education system and PU's affiliation. Hence, steps will be taken to curb such practices.

Syndicate resolves seniority list issue

The Syndicate resolved that the UGC guidelines regarding preparation of seniority list of teachers w.e.f. 1.1.2006 for all departments in the PU. In the particular context of the UBS, the decision of the Court as it stands today (the matter is subjudice) is that Prof Deepak Kapur is entitled to be the chairperson of University Business School (UBS). However, if Deepak Kapur, for whatever reason, is on leave, then Manoj Sharma would be designated as chairperson.
